What happens when teachers are empowered to design solutions to the challenges they encounter in their classrooms, rather than simply implement externally developed reforms? In this presentation at The UWI Schools of Education 2026 Biennial Conference, Angel Caglin and Carrie Wright explore the role of teacher agency in advancing gender equity and inclusive education. Drawing on research and experiences from the GPE KIX Full Potential Program in Saint Lucia, Dominica, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the presentation examines how professional dialogue, student perspectives, and human-centred innovation can support teachers in questioning assumptions, developing solutions, and transforming their practice. The presentation shares emerging insights into how teachers exercise agency through reflection, instructional decision-making, collaboration, and participation in school improvement processes. It also considers the institutional conditions necessary to sustain teacher-led innovation.
