Soldering the Brass Parts - Restoring Delton's Brass Fire Wagon

Join us as we restore Delton's Brass Fire Wagon, this week we are soldering the broken brass parts back together. We'll show you the tools and techniques needed for a successful repair, including silver solder, flux, a torch, and a soldering iron. Watch as we bring this beautiful brass locomotive model back to life! Soldering brass is a bit tricky, especially when any of the parts are large. The key to a good solder joint is heating the parts to just beyond the solder's melting point so the solder flows into the joint. Silver solder requires a bit more heat than the usual lead-tin solder and flux. So we will be using a torch as well as a Weller soldering iron with the heat turned all the way up. Rosin core solder used for electronics is usually 40% lead and 60% tin and has a built-in flux, the rosin core. While rosin core solder must be used when soldering electronic components, it can be used to solder brass parts as well. There is also acid-core lead-tin solder, which should NOT be used for electronics, which has a built-in acid flux. Moreover "solid core" can also be used but also requires the use of a flux.
