On October 23, 2026, Volvo Cars published its third-quarter report, and by the close its stock had lost 24%. Everyone blames electric cars. Volvo's own report says something else: in Europe, where Volvo sells the most electric cars, business held up and was the only region that contributed to operating performance. The damage came from China, where revenue fell by almost half, and from America, where tariffs and the end of the EV tax credit squeezed the margins of imported cars. Volvo's CEO says half of the business was not contributing to profitability.
The full Volvo story: the seat belt and the safety brand, Geely buying Volvo from Ford in 2010, the 2021 listing, what happened in China (retail sales -41%, Xiaomi, BYD and the price war), the American tariffs and the EX30 that left the US market, the EX90 write-off, the CAFE credit hit, a cash number almost nobody is talking about, the new CEO, the fair case for Volvo (EX60 orders, Europe, cost cuts), and what it all means if you own or want to buy a Volvo.
Do you own a Volvo, or did you walk away from one? Would you buy one today? Tell us in the comments. And if we got anything wrong, tell us, and we will correct it.
