📘 The Lazy Way to Save: 604 money-saving home and life hacks for seniors → edithshomehacks.com One cup of the $1 brown bottle in a load of whites, and what it really does. Six ways to use 3% hydrogen peroxide in the laundry, plus the mix going around online that should never go in your washer. Grandma Edith's book, The Lazy Way to Save: 604 money-saving home and life hacks, the senior way. No ladder, no kneeling, no nonsense. 594 pages, including a whole chapter on laundry habits that cut the cost of every load. $27 one time, no subscription. 👉 edithshomehacks.com The six (use plain 3% drugstore peroxide only) • #6 Whiter whites: 1 cup in a load of white cotton. Pour it where your washer's manual says liquid color-safe bleach goes. If it doesn't say, pour it into the water before the clothes in a top-loader, or into the detergent drawer with liquid detergent in a front-loader. Some bleach cups are for chlorine bleach only. • #5 Blood on a pillowcase or sheet: cold water only, never hot. Rinse, rub with bar soap or detergent, and soak in cool water 30 min. If it's still there, try an enzyme pre-soak. If a shadow stays, put a few drops of peroxide on it for 1–3 min, rinse, then wash. • #4 Yellow under the arms of a white blouse: make a paste of 1 tbsp baking soda, 1 tbsp peroxide and a squirt of dish soap. Work it in with an old toothbrush for 1 min, let it sit 1 hour, then wash. Test a small spot first. • #3 The test before anything colored: read the triangle on the care label. An empty triangle means any bleach. Two slanted lines inside means non-chlorine bleach only. An X through it means no bleach. Then dab a drop inside a seam, wait a few minutes and blot with a white paper towel. • #2 A towel that smells sour even when it's clean: put peroxide on the spot for 15–20 min (if it won't harm the color), and repeat 2–3 times if needed, then wash. For a whole white towel, soak it 20 min in a bucket on a chair with 1 cup peroxide and enough cool water to wet it. • #1 Never mix it: no peroxide with chlorine bleach in the same load or jug, no peroxide and vinegar in one bottle (that makes peracetic acid, which is corrosive), and never bleach with vinegar or ammonia (that gives off toxic gas). Use one product per load. Safety, said plainly • 3% only. Keep it in the brown bottle, because light turns it into water. Label any squeeze bottle you fill. • Peroxide is a bleach. It can lighten colors, so test first. • Store it in its labeled bottle, up high and away from grandchildren and pets. Prices: Walmart, Oct 2026: a 32 oz bottle of 3% peroxide is about $1 (about 25¢ a load). A 3 lb tub of OxiClean Versatile is about $9.38.
