This webinar explores how extended periods of low solar and wind generation affect energy storage requirements, grid reliability, and renewable generation siting. Dr. Ryan Milcarek presents a case study examining the complete replacement of fossil fuel-based electricity generation with solar, wind, and energy storage. Using actual grid loads from 2019–2024, weather data, and resource capacity, the analysis evaluates hourly generation and storage use. The session explains dunkelflauten, sometimes called “dark doldrums,” and introduces a framework for separating daily cycling, seasonal demand, and multi-day energy storage needs. Results from Arizona, the Pacific Northwest, and the Northeast highlight how regional conditions influence storage capacity and generation siting. This webinar is ideal for engineers, researchers, energy professionals, policymakers, and anyone interested in renewable energy integration and long-duration energy storage.
