2026 marks 50 years since British Rail's Class 43s began service.
These iconic diesel locomotives still hold the world speed record for diesel traction with an absolute maximum speed of 148.5 MPH.
The Class 43s are better known by their nicknames of the 'High Speed Train' (HST) and the Intercity 125, the latter in reference to their maximum service speed of 125 MPH.
The class has largely been withdrawn with only a small number still in regular service at the time of producing this video. However, several members of the class have been preserved with some undertaking special railtours along the network.
In this video, you'll see a special HST excursion, called 'The Journey Shrinker', pulling into Swansea High Street station at the end of it's journey.
The excursion was operated by the 125 Group and was 'top & tailed' by speed record breaker 43159, which has been recently repainted into the Intercity 125 executive livery and 43025 'Exeter' sporting the iconic Intercity swallow livery.
