Two serpents. Two civilizations. One question nobody has ever settled.
Deep beneath ancient Egypt, Apep waits in the black river of the underworld, hungry for the sun. He is beaten back every night, and every night he returns. Far out in the Norse ocean, Jörmungandr, the Midgard Serpent, lies coiled around the entire world with his tail in his jaws, waiting for a single final morning. Both carry the end of the world inside them. So which is stronger?
In this video we settle it with a five-round contest: origin, size, weapons, enemies and fate. Along the way you'll hear how Odin threw a baby serpent into the sea, how Thor went fishing for a world-sized monster, how Ra's golden boat fights its way through the night, and how Egyptian priests burned wax serpents to protect the sun.
We also look at where these stories come from. Apep appears on tomb walls, in funerary papyri and in temple rituals across more than a thousand years. Jörmungandr comes to us mostly through the Eddas, written down in thirteenth-century Iceland, with a few older fragments of skaldic verse. Where the sources disagree, we say so.
Everything in this video is retold "according to the myth," for history and education.
