What if being “born twice” has nothing to do with being born again? In Sanskrit, Dvija means “twice-born.” But why did ancient Indian traditions use this extraordinary idea? And what exactly is supposed to be born the second time? In this episode of Shodh Files, we investigate the mystery of Dvija through Indian philosophy, Upanayana, Kundalini symbolism, the concept of ego death, and modern neuroscience. A snake sheds its old skin — but remains the same snake. Yoga and Tantra use the serpent as a powerful symbol of Kundalini. Ancient texts speak of transformation, knowledge, and a different way of seeing the self. Meanwhile, neuroscience asks an equally strange question: Is the “I” you experience actually a permanent entity — or a model constructed by your brain? We explore: • What does Dvija (द्विज) actually mean? • Why are birds and teeth also described as “twice-born”? • How did Upanayana become associated with a ritual “second birth”? • What does the sacred thread / Yajnopavita have to do with this transformation? • What does the story of Shvetaketu in the Chandogya Upanishad reveal about knowledge and identity? • What does “Tat Tvam Asi” actually mean — and what should we NOT read into it? • Is Kundalini connected to the idea of a second birth? • What does neuroscience tell us about the self-model and our sense of “I”? • What happens during experiences sometimes described as ego death? • Are these ancient concepts actually connected — or are we connecting ideas that developed in different contexts? This episode does not attempt to prove that ancient Indian philosophy predicted modern neuroscience. Instead, it asks a more interesting question: When different traditions describe the destruction of an old identity and the emergence of a new way of seeing yourself, are they describing the same human experience — or simply using similar metaphors? And finally: If your first birth gave you a body... what could your second birth give you? --- CHAPTERS 00:00 — Prologue 01:48 — Born Without a “Me” 03:04 — The Serpent Inside 04:09 — The Skin We Leave Behind 05:18 — Who Built Your “I”? 06:20 — The Day “I” Disappears 07:45 — Your Brain Invented You? 08:56 — What Does “Dvija” Really Mean? 10:12 — The Second Birth 11:18 — The Thread Around the Body 12:14 — The Student Who Knew Nothing 13:21 — “You Are That” 14:57 — Are We Connecting the Wrong Dots? 16:05 — Can Science See the “I”? 17:26 — So What Is Born Twice? 18:28 — Who Survives When “I” Dies? 19:52 — The Skin Falls Away --- Shodh Files investigates the intersection of science, consciousness, neuroscience, ancient Indian philosophy, Vedic traditions, and human experience — separating documented evidence from interpretation, symbolism, and speculation.
