05 - 1 Peter 4:10-11 (Stewards, Not Owners)

What does it actually mean to be gifted by God? In 1 Peter 4:10-11, the apostle Peter makes a sweeping and humbling claim: every single believer has received a gift from God, and every one of those gifts is meant to serve others. Not some believers. Not the specially trained or the publicly recognized. Each one. This is the theological heartbeat of the priesthood of all believers, and it challenges us to move past the idea that the church is divided between the gifted few who minister and the rest who simply receive. We are all stewards of what Peter calls God's varied grace, a kaleidoscope of gifts distributed across the body so that the whole congregation needs the whole congregation. The ancient image of the steward is striking here. A steward could manage vast resources and carry real responsibility, yet own nothing. Everything that passed through his hands belonged to the master. That is precisely the picture Peter paints of our gifts. They were not earned; they are not ours to hoard or showcase, and we will one day give an account for how we managed them. Whether our gift is teaching, hospitality, administration, mercy, or simply showing up faithfully in unseen ways, the question this passage presses on each of us is the same: what has God entrusted to me, and am I actually using it?
