The Sunflower County Courthouse in Indianola, Mississippi, is one of the most important stops on the Fannie Lou Hamer Digital Driving Tour because it marks the place where Hamer first tried to register to vote. Just days after learning at William Chapel Church that she had a constitutional right to vote, Hamer joined 17 others on August 31, 1962, and traveled from Ruleville to Indianola to become what she called a “first-class citizen.” Although Hamer was turned away after facing Mississippi’s discriminatory voter registration test, the experience only strengthened her commitment to the movement.
