In 2014, American automakers recalled more than 40 million vehicles. That same year, one company recalled exactly one.
Not one model. Not one production batch. One single car — the only one of its kind in the entire country.
This is the story of the smallest recall in automotive history: a Koenigsegg Agera, a tire pressure warning light that was slightly late, and a defect the owner had never once experienced. When Koenigsegg filed the official paperwork with the US government, they wrote a sentence that has to be read to be believed.
But the real story isn't the joke. It's the man who built that car — a 22-year-old with no engineering degree who founded a hypercar company on money made trading frozen chicken, and turned an abandoned fighter jet air base into a factory that would eventually build the fastest production car on Earth.
And at the opposite end of the scale sits the largest recall in history: 67 million airbags that could fire metal shrapnel into the people they were built to protect — hidden by the manufacturer for a decade.
Same agency. Same law. Same forms. One came for 67 million. One came for a single car in a single garage.
