Could a 1975-D Lincoln penny hiding in your collection be worth thousands of
dollars?
The 1975-D Lincoln cent was struck at the Denver Mint, and more than 4.5 billion
were produced. Because of that enormous mintage, most circulated 1975-D pennies
are common and are generally worth close to face value.
But condition, rarity, and genuine Mint errors can completely change the story.
PCGS records a 1975-D Lincoln cent graded MS67+ with an auction record of
$4,112.50. That does NOT mean every 1975-D penny is worth thousands. The record
belongs to a specific exceptionally high-grade coin, and ordinary circulated examples
are dramatically different.
In this video, we take a close look at the 1975-D Lincoln cent, including its enormous
Denver mintage, traditional 95% copper composition, high-grade examples, and the
types of genuine Mint errors collectors search for.
Some 1975-D cents have been documented with dramatic off-center strikes,
broadstrikes, multiple strikes, die caps, die breaks, clipped planchets, and other
unusual Mint-made errors. These are very different from ordinary post-Mint damage.
The 1975-D cent weighs approximately 3.11 grams, measures about 19 millimeters,
has a plain edge, and was made from the traditional 95% copper and 5% zinc bronze
composition used for Lincoln cents before the major composition change in 1982.
If you have a 1975-D penny, look closely at the date, the small D mint mark, the
strike, the rim, and the overall condition.
And remember: never clean, polish, scratch, drill, or chemically treat a potentially
valuable coin.
A strange-looking coin is not automatically a Mint error. Genuine errors have specific
characteristics created during the manufacturing process.
Watch until the end to learn what makes a 1975-D Lincoln cent interesting to
collectors and what you should check before spending one.

IMPORTANT VALUE DISCLAIMER:
Auction records represent specific coins in specific grades and conditions. They are
not guaranteed prices for every example of the same date and mint mark. Coin values
can vary substantially based on grade, color designation, error type, certification, eye
appeal, provenance, and market conditions.
