ADDICTION HAS NO ZIP CODE, NO BOUNDARIES, AND NO LIMITS! In this powerful episode of Raw Recovery: The Community, we sit down with James, a man originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, joining us by way of Erie, PA, who is approaching FOUR YEARS of sobriety this January! James takes us back to where it all began. At just 14 years old, he started experimenting with alcohol and marijuana. While many of his friends weren't interested in experimenting with drugs, James admits he was always the one willing to push the envelope. As he puts it, he was the one who jumped off the porch early. What started at a young age eventually led him down a road involving crack cocaine, fentanyl, and heroin. But this conversation goes far beyond the substances themselves. James opens up about the impact his addiction had on his relationships, especially with his two daughters. He shares some of the uncomfortable, embarrassing, and painful situations his substance use placed them in, along with the reality of trying to maintain relationships while actively struggling with addiction. We also discuss the lengths people sometimes go to conceal their substance use from those they love. James recalls trying to clean himself up before certain people came around, hiding what he was doing, and refusing to admit he was using, even when the people closest to him already suspected the truth. And here's something that makes this conversation even more personal. James is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and so am I! Although I now reside in New York City and he joined us by way of Erie, PA, our conversation is another reminder that addiction has an endless reach. Different cities, different backgrounds, different experiences, but so many familiar struggles. BUT WHAT I REALLY WANT YOU TO TAKE AWAY FROM THIS EPISODE IS WHAT JAMES IS DOING TODAY! James isn't just sharing his story for the sake of telling it. He's taking everything he's lived through and using those experiences to help the next person. Today, he's actively involved in recovery spaces, doing meaningful work inside jails and throughout the community, reaching individuals who may still be struggling, who may feel forgotten, or who simply need to hear from somebody who understands what they're going through. His journey is a reminder that our past does not have to determine our purpose. Sometimes the very experiences we once tried so hard to hide become the experiences that allow us to reach somebody else. And that's what Raw Recovery: The Community is all about! We don't just talk about addiction. We talk about accountability, relationships, consequences, healing, rebuilding, and what it means to give back. Because at the end of the day, EVERYONE IS IN RECOVERY FROM SOMETHING! 💙 If James's story resonates with you, please LIKE this episode, leave a COMMENT, SHARE it with somebody who needs encouragement, and SUBSCRIBE to Raw Recovery: The Community.
