West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced that his government plans to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) within six months, following the examples of Uttarakhand and Gujarat. Adhikari has also announced plans for stringent laws against what he described as “love jihad”, “land jihad” and religious conversion. The state government has already constituted a high-level committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai to examine the draft UCC framework. The proposed UCC would seek uniform civil rules across communities in areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption.
