Former New York City Ballet and Miami City Ballet soloist Kathryn Morgan joins us for a conversation about what really goes on inside ballet competitions, with parts 1 and 2 together in one video. She explains how scoring and judging work, why she believes the real evaluation at YAGP finals comes from the scholarship classes rather than the stage, and how social media has reshaped what young dancers think a ballet career looks like.
We also asked her the questions parents keep asking us, including whether independent dancers are treated differently than school-affiliated ones and what people mean by “connected schools.” From there the conversation turns to what judges talk about in the judges’ room, the lasting harm that well-meaning comments about a dancer’s body can do, when a young dancer should stop competing and commit to training, and why she thinks ballet companies are struggling to hold onto talent and audiences.
