This conga and timbale hybrid drum set is the first of five setups featured in a video series. I chose Oye Como Va as the demonstration song because it’s a great opportunity to talk about Tito Puente. // Rhythm Insider Benefits (Free Gift!) ⭐ https://www.rhythminsider.com/subscribe What I love about Tito Puente’s compositions is that the energy of his performance is written into his pieces. As a performer, it’s so easy to play his compositions with excitement and joy because it’s ingrained in Tito Puente’s work. Check out his vibraphone playing. He plays vibraphone like a timbale player. Check out his timbale playing. He composes melodies, taking you places through his drumming. Okay … I had to get that off my chest and pay homage to the late great Tito Puente. In this setup, my right hand is playing timbale, left hand is on the conga, and my feet are taking care of the kick and hi-hat. This particular groove for Oye Como Va is a cha cha. It’s main parts are tumbao on congas, cha cha bell on timbales, and the guiro part. I chose one conga for this situation because I had enough going on with the rest of my limbs. For example, the guiro part is played with my left foot on the hi hat and the tumba drum part of the tumbao pattern is played by my right foot on the kick drum. During the breaks, you may have noticed that I played the mambo bell with the conga and kick. This is something that Jose Aponte taught me and was later reinforced by David Garibaldi who said the bells add a timbre to the instrumentation that balance the drums and make it sound less cluttered. This bell and drum combination may seem like a minor detail, but it’s those little things, the nuances that make a big difference in the balance of instrumentation on your drum tracks. I hope you enjoyed this video. The next video in this Rhythm Notes series on hybrid drum set ups to the cocktail kit family. I convert my gear into the cocktail setup style and add some other percussion to explore some Afro-Atlantic popular rhythms. Featured gear ...
