Watch the complete ASMR restoration of a severely rusted 1971 Ford Maverick Grabber, rebuilt from an abandoned wreck into a road-ready American classic.
This no-talking car restoration follows the entire process: discovery, teardown, rust repair, metal cutting and welding, bodywork, filler and block sanding, primer, Grabber Blue paint, reassembly, a full Ford 302 Windsor V8 rebuild, first start, and road test.
In this restoration story, the 1971 Ford Maverick Grabber is discovered inside an abandoned independent newspaper printing plant outside Buffalo, New York. Years of neglect have left the car with faded paint, severe rocker corrosion, a heavily damaged front fender, cracked glass, damaged lights, flat tires and extensive body deterioration.
The Maverick is carefully transported to the Good Old Cars workshop and completely disassembled. The damaged steel unibody is stripped, inspected and repaired section by section. Rusted metal is cut away, replacement steel is fabricated and welded in, dents are corrected with traditional hammer-and-dolly techniques, and the body is gradually reshaped before filler, block sanding and primer.
The body is then refinished in period-inspired Grabber Blue with the correct black Grabber treatment before the restored components are installed.
The original-style Ford 302 Windsor V8 is also fully rebuilt. The engine is disassembled, cleaned and measured, all eight cylinders are inspected and machined as required, the rotating assembly is rebuilt, and the engine is reassembled with a single Autolite-style 2-barrel carburetor and the factory-style 3-speed manual transmission.
Finally, the Maverick is reassembled with its restored black interior, chrome trim, period 14-inch wheels, suspension, drum brakes, glass and exterior hardware before the rebuilt 302 V8 is started for the first time and the car returns to the road.
For the best experience, use headphones and enjoy the detailed restoration sounds of sanding, cutting, welding, painting, engine rebuilding and final assembly.
