So it serves as the District capital of New Juaben South Municipality as well as the Regional Capital of the Eastern Region of Ghana 🇬🇭. The city is a blend of colonial and modern architecture. Koforidua is known as a calm and cool city, serving as a commercial hub, administrative center, and a top tourism spot famous for the nearby Boti Falls, Umbrella Rock, and the sacred Obuo Tabri Mountain. Based on oral tradition, the city derived its name from an Akan man named Kofi Ofori, who had built his hut under a huge mahogany tree. This tree provided shelter for weary farmers who were returning from their farms. Over time, it became common for the farmers to say that they were going to rest under Kofi Ofori's tree. In their local language, Twi, the word for 'tree' is 'dua'. The combination of Ofori's name and tree becomes 'Koforidua'.[7] The 'Akwantukese' (The Big Journey Festival) is celebrated yearly to mark the movement of the inhabitants of Koforidua's ancestors from the 'Ashanti Region' to their present location of Koforidua. Akwantukese Festival is a festival celebrated by the people of New Juaben traditional area in the Eastern Region of Ghana, where Koforidua is the capital. It is celebrated to mark the epic journey of the people from Juaben in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.[1] They settled not only with their history but the earnest desire to replicate or emulate some communities from their former home in Juaben. Just as there is Oyoko, Asokore, Effiduase and Koforidua in the currently known Ashanti Region, some towns in Koforidua are known to have such names TERTIARIES in KOFORIDUA.
