South Carolina is the fastest growing state in America. So why is a whole stretch of it emptying out fast enough that some towns may not survive?
South Carolina added close to 80,000 residents in a single recent year, pouring into the suburbs of Charleston, Greenville, and the Charlotte side of the state. At the very same moment, the state's own demographers project that a cluster of counties out here will shrink sharply over the next couple of decades, and a few towns inside them by nearly a third, with every county in the region now recording more deaths than births.
So we counted down 11 South Carolina towns losing people so fast they may not exist as real, functioning towns much longer, ranked by how close to the edge they truly are. The dying half is out in the Pee Dee and the old mill and tobacco country, where the factory closed, the young people left for the booming side of the state, and the ones who stayed grew old in place. You will see county seats down to a few thousand people, main streets where more storefronts are dark than lit, and towns where the median age keeps climbing because nobody under forty has a reason to stay.
This is the honest picture of rural depopulation in South Carolina, town by town, and it is the exact mirror image of the growth story everyone else is telling about this state. If you are thinking about buying cheap in a small South Carolina town, or you just want to understand where the state is quietly hollowing out, this countdown walks through the places on the wrong side of the line.
