A boiling river in the Amazon reaches temperatures near 93°C, and the nearest active volcano is more than 700 kilometers away. So what is heating this water? Deep in the Peruvian rainforest, the Shanay-Timpishka, often translated as "boiled with the heat of the sun," steams for about 6 kilometers. This video tests the obvious answers one by one: a volcano, buried magma, a simple hot spring and even the sun. Then it follows the water samples that geophysicist Andrés Ruzo collected, and they point somewhere unexpected. Follow a single raindrop on a journey of nearly 3 kilometers underground, through hidden faults and into rock hot enough to scald. You will see why this non-volcanic hydrothermal system is so rare, and why the heat beneath it is the same heat beneath your own street. #BoilingRiver #Amazon
