In 1995, Sega had done the impossible. It had gone head to head with
Nintendo, the giant that owned video games for a decade, and actually won, taking a whole generation of fans with attitude, speed, and a blue hedgehog cooler than Mario. Two years later, it was a third-place afterthought in a race everyone thought had only two runners. And Sony barely lifted a finger to make it happen.
This is the story of the Sega Saturn, the console where Sega's collapse
began, and how the company that beat Nintendo threw it all away, one
self-inflicted wound at a time. It runs through a machine so powerful and so complex it fought its own developers, a surprise launch that blindsided retailers and starved its own shelves, a rival who won with a single word, "$299," a 3D Sonic that never came out, and a company that stood on a stage and told the world its own console had no future. Nobody beat Sega. Sega beat itself.
