Russia’s armored breakthrough capability is being dismantled by the manpower choices meant to keep its offensive moving, leaving tanks available while trained crews are reassigned to infantry and drone units. Two tank battalions near Sumy and Kharkiv were disbanded, removing roughly 62 tanks and redirecting about 186 trained crewmen. Reassigning those specialists adds bodies to assault units now, but strips away the experience needed to open a breach and exploit it. Specialized mine-clearing platoons expose the same weakness because they may operate with only two key vehicles, meaning a single loss can cut route-opening capacity in half before an armored column advances. Once a lane is opened, following vehicles are forced into the same narrow track, where Ukrainian drones can strike the front and rear vehicles and trap the rest between mines. Roughly 1,800 Ural logistics trucks have also been lost, while one truckload can require about 23 ground-robot trips to replace. Factories can keep producing tanks, but steel cannot recreate experienced crews, recovery teams, engineers or the shared training needed for large-scale maneuver. Larger formations are increasingly difficult to move and sustain, pushing commanders toward one-, two- and three-man infiltration groups instead of coordinated armored operations. Moscow is still manufacturing hardware while losing the human and logistical system required to turn local gains into operational breakthroughs.
