This Hidden Gold Deposit Beneath Ontario Could Change Everything
Just off the Trans-Canada Highway, 35 km east of Marathon, Ontario, sits one of the richest gold deposits in Canadian history. Since 1985 it has produced about 25 million ounces of gold. For more than a century, almost nobody recognized it.
This is the story of Hemlo. It was nearly missed for 112 years and finally found on drill hole 76 by a geologist who wouldn’t quit. Then the fight over who owned the mine went all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. Its chemistry is so unusual that three of its minerals were new to science.
In 2025, Barrick sold Hemlo, its last producing gold mine in Canada. The new owner, Hemlo Mining Corp., has since raised the mine’s measured and indicated gold resource by 34%, to about 4.8 million ounces. A 40-year-old mine is growing, not shrinking, and that could change what an “old mine” is worth.
