Sharada, born as Saraswati Devi on June 12, 1945, is an Indian actress and politician. She is renowned for her work primarily in Telugu films and Malayalam films. Let’s delve into her fascinating journey:
Early Life and Career:
Sarada hails from Tenali, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India. Her parents, Venkateswar Rao and Satyavathi Devi, were farmers. She has a brother named Mohan Rao.
In her childhood, Sarada was sent to live with her grandmother, Kanakamma, in Madras. Her grandmother was a strict disciplinarian who allowed rehearsals only on Sundays and wouldn’t even let the heroes touch her!
Sarada began learning dance at the age of six and performed during festivals. Her mother aspired for her to become a big star in the cine field.
Despite her father’s initial lack of interest, Sarada pursued her dream. She later married Telugu actor Chalam, but the couple eventually divorced.
Currently, Sarada resides with her brother’s family in Chennai.
Film Career:
Sarada made her debut in cinema with a minor role in the Telugu film “Kanyasulkam.” However, she returned to theater and played a significant role in the Telugu version of “Rakta Kanneeru,” a Tamil drama.
Her breakthrough came with the Akkineni Nageswara Rao starrer “Iddaru Mitrulu,” which became a major hit.
In 1965, Sarada established herself in the Malayalam film industry with remarkable performances in movies like “Shakuntala,” “Murappennu,” “Udhyogastha,” “Kattu Thulasi,” and “Inapravukal.”
She also appeared in a few Tamil, Hindi, and Kannada language films.
Awards and Recognition:
Sarada is a three-time recipient of the National Film Award for Best Actress. Her exceptional roles in “Thulabharam” (1968), “Swayamvaram” (1972), and “Nimajjanam” (1977) earned her these prestigious awards.
The Urvasi Award was officially designated as the National Film Award for Best Actress during her time.
Political Involvement:
Sarada has made significant contributions to Indian cinema and was honored with the NTR National Award by the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
She is also known as Urvasi Sharada due to her remarkable achievements.
