I Built a Shelter Before the Blizzard Hit | −28°C, Alone in the Forest

A storm was coming in from the north and I had about four hours of light. I went in with my dog Ash, found a spruce that had blown over two winters ago, and built a shelter into its root plate — a bough roof packed with thirty centimetres of snow, a bough floor, and a small stove. Then half the roof came down and I had to build it twice. No talking, no music. Just the work, the fire, and the storm coming in.
