Christopher Moltisanti gave Tony Soprano nearly everything, but it still was not enough. This Sopranos analysis looks at Christopher’s real addiction: not just heroin, but Tony’s approval, and the belief that enough loyalty, sacrifice and obedience would eventually buy permanent love and protection.
Tony becomes more than Christopher’s boss. He becomes a surrogate father, gatekeeper and source of identity, which is why Christopher keeps returning even after humiliation, addiction, resentment and broken promises. The tragedy reaches its peak when Christopher chooses Tony over Adriana, believing that the ultimate sacrifice will finally prove what he means to the family.
Instead, Tony increasingly sees Christopher as a liability. By the time of the car crash, the infant car seat does not create Tony’s desire to remove Christopher — it simply gives him a moral excuse for something that had already happened emotionally. Christopher spent years trying to become irreplaceable, only to discover that in Tony Soprano’s world, nobody is.
North Jersey Files breaks down The Sopranos through character psychology, hidden motives, loyalty, power and the deeper meaning behind its most important relationships.
