Celtic music and fantasy ambience under the skull lanterns of Baba Yaga's hut, on a night of first frost.
Lie down low in the frosted moss, on the near bank of a small black pool. It is deep night and cold, there is no moon, and across the water an old hut stands in its yard.
The hut stands on short log stilts, leaning a little, its turf roof heavy with moss and crowned with dead stakes; a mortar and a broom lean beside its plank door. Around the yard stand its guards, on long thin staves taller than the roof: old skulls, grey with moss and lichen, their eye sockets glowing amber like embers that never quite settle. They are never quite still. They turn and look about the yard, and now and then one turns to look straight out at you before it looks away again. One staff stands bare, and the raven sits on it against the night sky: it turns its head, looks down, ruffles its feathers, now and then spreads its wings, and never rests for long. A fire burns in the yard by the foot of its staff. Behind the cloth of the big window shadows come and go, this way and back again: someone huge and hunched with a long hooked nose, something small and shaggy that crosses low, and sometimes only a person. The pool at your feet lies calm and holds the low, flickering firelight of both windows, and now and then a small fish rises in it and dives again. Mist lies on the still lake to the left, the spruces stand dark beyond it, and frost has whitened the moss and the sedge among the last red cranberries.
In the Russian tale of Vasilisa the Beautiful, a girl is sent through the forest to Baba Yaga for fire. A white rider passes her at dawn and a red one at sunrise, and at nightfall a black one, and then the eyes in the skulls on Baba Yaga's fence begin to glow until the clearing is as bright as day. Baba Yaga travels in a mortar, urging it on with a pestle and sweeping away her tracks with a broom, and the old tales find her at home on the stove, her nose grown into the ceiling. When Vasilisa goes home, she carries one of the skulls on a stick to light her way. And every Slavic house was said to keep a small shaggy spirit of its own. Whose shadows pass behind this window tonight, nobody here says.
What plays, and where it comes from: six slow Celtic airs in turn, on harp, low fiddle, cello and low whistle, with no words, no drums and no beat. Together they last about seventeen minutes, then begin again. Beneath them the bog keeps its late-autumn night: a few crickets singing and falling quiet, a frog now and then, an owl far off, sometimes the deep boom of a bittern and, very rarely a long sigh from somewhere out on the mire. The fire makes no sound. When a fish rises you hear it break the water, and now and then, faint and far, something else splashes out in the dark. The music and the other night sounds are made with AI tools; the splashes are real water, recorded by us.
Three hours in this yard, for sleep, reading and quiet work; it is best kept low. Something here stays unexplained; nothing here means you harm.
