Zulfiqar aur MolaAli ع Kay Horse Mein Say Afzal Kon? Poem on Zulfiqar and Dul Dul Zulfiqar (ذوالفقار) — History Zulfiqar is the famous sword traditionally associated with Imam Ali ibn Abi Talibؑ. It became one of the most recognizable symbols of Aliؑ’s courage, bravery, justice, and military leadership in Islamic history and later Islamic art. 1. Where did Zulfiqar come from? Historical sources give different accounts. One important early tradition says that Zulfiqar was among the spoils acquired at the Battle of Badr (624 CE). According to this account, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ kept the sword and later gave it to Imam Aliؑ. The exact identity of its original owner is also reported differently; the TDV Islamic Encyclopedia records the commonly transmitted view that it belonged to ʿĀṣ ibn Munabbih, who was killed at Badr. 2. When did the Prophet ﷺ give it to Imam Aliؑ? A widely circulated tradition places the transfer at the Battle of Uhud (625 CE). Other historical reports give different circumstances, so the precise occasion is not certain. This is important because the famous expression: لَا فَتَىٰ إِلَّا عَلِيٌّ، لَا سَيْفَ إِلَّا ذُو الْفَقَار “There is no youth/hero like Ali, and no sword like Zulfiqar” became closely associated with Zulfiqar and Imam Aliؑ. Historical sources differ regarding the circumstances and transmission of this statement. 3. What does the name Zulfiqar mean? The Arabic name Dhū al-Fiqār (ذو الفقار) is generally connected with fiqār, referring to the vertebrae/notches or grooves of the spine. Historical descriptions associate the sword with grooves or notches along its blade. The familiar modern image of Zulfiqar—with a split or forked tip—became especially prominent in later Islamic art. The Metropolitan Museum notes that this forked representation appears to have developed from interpretations of a dream associated with the Battle of Uhud. 4. Why is Zulfiqar so important? Over the centuries, Zulfiqar became much more than the name of a sword. It became a symbol of Imam Aliؑ and of courage and authority. It appears in Islamic manuscripts, banners, weapons, talismans, Ottoman art, Persian literature, and Shi'i devotional traditions. There are also later religious traditions describing Zulfiqar as having extraordinary or miraculous origins. These should be distinguished from the earlier historical reports about the sword. 5. What happened to the original sword? The later history of the physical sword is uncertain. Medieval sources give various accounts of its transmission after the Prophet ﷺ and Imam Aliؑ, including reports connecting it with Abbasid and Fatimid rulers. There is no universally accepted modern identification of an extant physical sword as the original Zulfiqar. #molaali #imamali #hazratali #majlis #majliseaza #livemajlis #livemajlistoday #newmajlis2026 #newmajlis #newmajlisaza #zakiraliabbasaskari #aliabbasaskari
