USS San Diego (ACR-6) – A Controversial Sinking off New York

You can count the number of American warships lost in the Great War on one hand. There was USS Memphis (formerly USS Tennessee) lost to a storm in 1916. There was also USS Jacob Jones, a destroyer lost in 1917. And the most famous of them all, USS San Diego- the former USS California. An armored cruiser sunk off the coast of New York in 1918, most likely by a German mine. This ship's sinking was quite a controversy, at the time and even today. Not surprising, as she was sunk so close to American shores. In a time where submarines were still coming into their own. Not to mention being the only major American warship lost to enemy action in the Great War.
