When Karl Lagerfeld died in February 2019, he left instructions that there was to be no burial, no coffin and no grave. Search every cemetery in France, in Germany, anywhere on earth, and you will not find his name on a single stone. For a man who was photographed more than almost anyone alive, that is an extraordinary thing to arrange.
He arranged it years in advance, while he was still perfectly well.
This is the story of the boy from a cold house outside Hamburg who rebuilt a dead French fashion house into an empire turning over more than eleven billion dollars a year, and who spent his entire life quietly taking himself apart. He changed the spelling of his name. He made his own birth year unverifiable and enjoyed the confusion. He refused to put his name above a door anywhere in the world. He took his own body apart at nearly seventy to fit into clothes cut by a man half his age.
And he never once removed the gloves.
Along the way: the mother whose cruelty he quoted with pride for fifty years, the wool competition in 1954 that put him in the same room as Yves Saint Laurent, the raid on Coco Chanel's archive that changed luxury forever, and Jacques de Bascher, the beautiful and magnificently useless man he loved for eighteen years and said he never touched.
What Lagerfeld kept hidden for thirty years is the last thing in this film.
