Kineton is one of them. Tiny, quiet and almost hidden among the Gloucestershire countryside, it is the kind of place you could pass through in a minute — a red telephone box, a country pub, a handful of old stone cottages — and then it would be gone. But step away from the road, and Kineton becomes something completely different. A shallow ford leads into the woods, where the sounds of the village quickly disappear beneath the trees. The path winds through moss and ferns, with squirrels in the branches, pheasants moving through the undergrowth and the quiet sound of water nearby. Crossing the ford again, I slowly made my way back through the village — past old Cotswold stone houses, cottage gardens, an apple orchard and all those tiny details that are so easy to miss when you are simply passing through. There is no grand landmark waiting at the end of this walk. And perhaps that is exactly the point. Kineton is simply a tiny corner of the Cotswolds where the village, woodland and countryside seem to blend into one another. A place you could cross in minutes, but somehow want to stay in a little longer. No talking. No music. Unlike the famous villages that attract visitors from around the world, there is no busy centre here and no long list of landmarks to discover. Instead, Kineton feels almost inseparable from the countryside surrounding it. A small collection of traditional Cotswold stone houses follows the quiet village lanes, while woodland, fields and water are only a few minutes away on foot. That is part of what makes Kineton feel so different. Within minutes, you can leave the stone cottages behind, cross the water and disappear beneath the trees. Walk a little further and there are moss-covered stones, ferns, wildlife and the sounds of the woodland — before the path eventually brings you back towards the village again. There are little details everywhere: gardens spilling over old stone walls, apples growing in a quiet orchard, feeders outside cottages and the first colours of autumn beginning to appear among the trees. Kineton may not have the landmarks or postcard views of the Cotswolds’ most famous villages. But perhaps that is its charm. It is quiet, small and wonderfully easy to miss.
