Kartik Nach 2082 Day 6 - Defeat of Madhu & Kaitabha by Lord Vishnu | Patan Durbar Square | Newa

The sixth day of Kartik Nach at Patan Durbar Square is about divine story of Lord Vishnu's victory over the demons Madhu and Kaitabha (Kaibath). At the dawn of creation, when the universe was covered only by endless waters, Lord Vishnu rested on the serpent Ananta in deep cosmic sleep. From His navel emerged a golden lotus on which sat Lord Brahma, ready to begin creation. But from the dirt of Vishnu’s ear were born two powerful demons — Madhu and Kaitabha — embodiments of arrogance and ignorance. As soon as they gained strength, they attacked Brahma and stole the sacred Vedas, hiding them deep within the cosmic ocean. Without the Vedas, Brahma could not create the world and cried out to Vishnu for help. Vishnu was asleep under the spell of Mahamaya, the divine Goddess of illusion. Hearing Brahma’s plea, he prayed to Her, and She withdrew from Vishnu’s eyes, awakening Him. Realizing what had happened, Vishnu rose from His serpent bed and confronted the two demons. A fierce battle began, shaking the waters of the cosmos. Madhu and Kaitabha were immensely strong and fought for thousands of years, neither side gaining victory. Then, deluded by Mahamaya, the demons grew proud and said, “O Vishnu, we are pleased with your courage. Ask for a boon.” Vishnu, smiling, replied, “Grant me the boon that I may kill both of you.” Arrogant and overconfident, they added, “You may slay us, but only in a place where there is no water.” Vishnu, the all-knowing, expanded His divine form and lifted them upon His thighs — the only place untouched by water — and there He beheaded both with His Sudarshana Chakra. After defeating Madhu and Kaitabha, Vishnu recovered the stolen Vedas and returned them to Brahma, allowing creation to begin. The two demons symbolize ego and ignorance, and their destruction by Vishnu represents the triumph of divine wisdom over arrogance and chaos. This sacred act is beautifully performed through traditional Newa dance, music, and expressive storytelling, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The performance continues to preserve centuries-old traditions, combining spirituality, art, and devotion in one grand display of Nepal's rich cultural heritage.
