My mother shopped the same Walmart for twenty years and never once paid what the sign said, and she did not believe in coupons. Fifteen things she knew about that store that the store would rather you never learned: where to look, which number to read, which aisle sells the dried chile for almost five times less by the ounce, what the meat case calls the cheap cuts, the four dollar list at the pharmacy, and the envelope that made all of it work. With this week's prices where a price proves the point.
📖 Number one is page 21 of The Old Mexican Way: before anything went in the cart, my mother's generation asked how many times will I buy this. And page 383 gives every item its three prices, the shelf, the little number, and the true one: https://oldmexicanway.com
None of this is your fault. Nobody taught you that a store is built, on purpose, by people who studied where your eyes go.
The 15:
15. Look down: the store brand is at your knees (20 lb rice about 58 cents a pound vs the eye-level bag over a dollar)
14. The end of the aisle is not a sale (paid placement, often full price)
13. The three prices: shelf, unit, and the true price (what you eat before it turns)
12. Three for five is a trick (usually a dollar sixty seven each; buy one)
11. The Hispanic aisle: whole guajillo about 76 cents an ounce vs the spice-aisle jar at about $3.56 an ounce
10. By the pound and by the hand (limes loose about 25 cents vs the bag at $2.49 a pound)
9. Only the season (a tomato in January is a hat for the dog)
8. The markdown hour: ask once (every store is different)
7. The meat by its Mexican name (diezmillo, chambarete, espaldilla; leg quarters about 70 to 87 cents a pound)
6. Never the big cart, never hungry, never the child's eye level
5. Buy the thing that can be fixed, and keep the receipt (many cards extend the warranty)
4. The four dollar list at the pharmacy ($4 for 30 days, $10 for 90; ask the pharmacist)
3. One trip, one list written at the cupboard
2. Read your own receipt: mark every line A (again) or N (never again)
1. The envelope
HONEST WORD: every store runs a little differently, so ask at yours. Prices are Walmart this week, rounded, and your store differs. The four dollar list does not cover every medicine and it changes; the pharmacist knows. Markdown hours vary by store. Not medical or financial advice.
