Several years after the defeat of Death Adder, a new enemy named Dark Guld rises to power, takes possession of the legendary Golden Axe, and spreads chaos across the land of Yuria. Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead return to stop him, each using their own weapons and elemental magic. The game retains the hack-and-slash gameplay of its predecessor while introducing several improvements, including the ability to control how much magic is used, throw enemies in different directions, and perform an attack that strikes enemies on both sides. Players can fight through the main adventure alone or cooperatively with a second player, while a separate Duel mode features a series of arena battles. Golden Axe II received generally favorable reviews, with critics praising its familiar action and improvements over the original, although some felt that the sequel was too similar to its predecessor and offered relatively little that was truly new.
