One of the biggest football stadiums in the world was built because of one man, and he arrived in the West hiding in the back of a truck. In January 1949, Ladislao Kubala escaped communist Hungary dressed as a Russian soldier. He had no club, no country and no money. Real Madrid offered him a huge contract, but after one train ride he signed for Barcelona instead. So many people came to watch him that Les Corts could no longer hold them, so Barcelona did something crazy: they built a new home for almost 100,000 people. It went far over budget, pushed the club deep into debt, and in the end they needed help from the one man they least wanted to ask: General Franco. The escape, the refugee team, the train ride, the first stone, the 288 million pesetas, and the day the Camp Nou opened.
