In December 1944, Technical Sergeant Bernard P. Bell and an eight-man squad from Company I, 142nd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division seized a schoolhouse at Mittelwihr, France, then held it through repeated German attacks, artillery and mortar fire, and direct fire from a tank. This video breaks down how Bell’s men maintained their fragile field-telephone link, called in artillery and mortar support, used armored support to blast openings in protective stone walls, and turned a crumbling building into an observation post that helped stop a much larger force. Bell’s actions at Mittelwihr earned him the Medal of Honor and offer a striking case study in World War II infantry defense, battlefield communications, combined arms, and the fighting in Alsace.
