One of the biggest misconceptions in jiu-jitsu is that pressure passing is simply about being bigger, stronger, or “heavier” than your opponent. In reality, effective pressure is a skill—one that relies on balance, positioning, timing, and an understanding of how to manipulate your opponent’s body rather than overpower it.
In this video, we break down our systematic approach to pressure passing from the Headquarters Position, one of the most effective platforms for controlling your opponent before passing the guard. Rather than rushing around the legs or trying to win through speed alone, we show how to establish a stable base first, then strategically shift your weight forward to occupy your opponent’s frames and force them into a defensive position.
From there, the pass becomes much simpler.
By staying connected to the hips instead of drifting toward the upper body too early, you’re able to fatigue the bottom player, limit their mobility, and create direct pathways to dominant positions—especially the mount. Instead of chasing passes, you learn how to make your opponent give them to you.
We also discuss one of the most overlooked concepts in guard passing: base before pressure. Before you can effectively apply your weight, you must first establish balance. Once your base is secure, you can safely transfer your body weight over your opponent without sacrificing your position. As they attempt to off-balance you or recover guard, their reactions reveal exactly how to pin the hips, eliminate their movement, and complete the pass.
At the highest levels of grappling, successful pressure passers aren’t simply working harder than everyone else—they’re making their opponents work harder. Great pressure forces poor decisions, creates predictable reactions, and allows you to capitalize on mistakes with minimal energy.
If you’ve ever struggled to keep opponents pinned, felt like your pressure wasn’t effective, or found yourself relying on speed instead of control, this video will help you develop a more efficient and systematic approach to passing the guard.
