Most Black American surnames start in 1865. Not all of them. Some were already in American court records in 1641 — attached to free Black families, by name, on paper, more than two centuries before emancipation. This is 25 of them, counted down, with the document behind each one. I'm Felicia. I've spent 32 years pulling records for other people's families, and I hit the 1870 wall in my own. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📕 THE NAMES BOOK There are thousands of these names. 25 is what fits in a video. The rest are in the book: around 300 Black American surnames, and for each one — where the name actually comes from, the earliest year and county where a record survives, every spelling it drifts into, the states it clusters in, and the specific record set to open first. Also inside: all 14 Akan day names and what each became. The colonial free Black surnames that thinned out and vanished. The chapter on names everyone assumes are English and aren't. Three worked examples from blank page to documented ancestor, including the dead ends. And one page of questions for the oldest person in your family, in the order that actually gets answers. What it won't do: tell you your African ethnic group from your last name. Nobody can. Anyone selling that is selling a guess. 👉 https://rootsofdna.com/p/the-names-bo... 📘 Already have your name and need the method? PAST THE 1870 WALL is the 21-day workbook that takes you from the relatives you can still call, to the county, to the courthouse, into the slavery-era records. 👉 https://rootsofdna.com/p/past-the-187... ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📚 SOURCES Free African Americans of North Carolina, Virginia and South Carolina — Paul Heinegg https://www.freeafricanamericans.com/ Anthony Johnson — Encyclopedia Virginia https://encyclopediavirginia.org/entr...
