The Man Who Said No: Jacques Glassmann and the Marseille Scandal

Marseille 1993: the only European Cup ever won by a French club, and the match-fixing scandal that still defines it. On 20 May 1993, Olympique de Marseille travelled to Valenciennes for a league match that barely seemed to matter. Six days later, they would face AC Milan in the European Cup final in Munich. What happened in between would lead to a stripped league title, a prison sentence for club president Bernard Tapie, and one of the most uncomfortable legacies in football history. In this documentary, we investigate the Valenciennes–Marseille affair (the VA-OM scandal) from the first approach to the final verdict. We trace how Tapie’s obsession with winning Europe, sharpened by the heartbreak of the 1991 final against Red Star Belgrade, set the stage. You’ll meet the key figures: midfielder Jean-Jacques Eydelie, general manager Jean-Pierre Bernès, Valenciennes players Jorge Burruchaga and Christophe Robert, and defender Jacques Glassmann, the man whose refusal brought the whole story into the open. We also follow the fallout. The French football federation’s sanctions, UEFA’s ban, the title nobody was given, Marseille’s forced drop to the second division, and the club’s bankruptcy are all covered. Then there’s the question that still divides fans today: why does the 1993 trophy still sit in Marseille’s history? Along the way, we examine the wider allegations from Rangers, CSKA Moscow and Red Star Belgrade, and separate what was proven in court from what was only claimed. If you’re interested in football scandals, Bernard Tapie, Ligue 1 history, the 1993 Champions League, or the biggest match-fixing cases in football, this story shows how the greatest night in French club football and its darkest scandal belong to the same season.
