A 61-year-old woman says she messed up her retirement. Another woman is 40 with no savings at all, one retiree is watching her spending creep up every year, and a daughter watched her parents go bankrupt paying for a nursing home. So is retirement actually still possible for most Americans, or did the deal quietly change?
In this video I react to people sharing where their retirement really stands, then break down how it got this way: only 14% of private industry workers still have access to a pension, so the saving, investing and risk all moved from the company onto you. The average retired worker gets about $2,071 a month from Social Security, the retirement trust fund is projected to run dry in late 2032 with checks cut to about 78% of what was promised, and a private nursing home room now costs a median of $127,000 a year that Medicare generally won't cover.
1. How old do you think you'll be when you can actually retire?
2. Are you counting on Social Security, or planning like it won't be there?
3. What's one thing you wish your parents had done differently for retirement?
