Nearly 10 years after demonetisation, old currency notes worth ₹1.44 crore have reportedly been recovered in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh. According to the police, a biker was found carrying a large quantity of discontinued ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes. The accused, identified as Devendra alias Raila, a resident of Ghaziabad, has been arrested.
The recovery took place on October 8 during a police checking operation in the Hapur Dehat police station area. Police said the accused was travelling towards Meerut, where the notes were allegedly supposed to be handed over to two people.
According to the preliminary investigation, the accused allegedly offered to arrange new currency in exchange for old notes and was reportedly promised a commission. However, the source of the currency and the possible involvement of other people remain under investigation.
In November 2016, the Indian government announced the withdrawal of the old ₹500 and ₹1,000 banknotes from circulation. The recovery of such a large quantity of discontinued currency nearly a decade later has raised several questions.
Where did the accused obtain these notes? Were other people involved in the alleged transaction? What will the police investigation reveal next?
