Intel just did something no other chipmaker on Earth has done. It shipped high-volume chips with layers printed by ASML’s High-NA machine. A scanner that costs around 400 million dollars. The most expensive chipmaking tool money can buy. This machine is supposed to carry Intel’s comeback. But here is what most people miss. Based on cost data IBM presented in 2025 a single exposure on this machine costs about two and a half times as much as an exposure on a standard EUV tool. For many layers it is still cheaper to print the same layer twice on the older machine. So the tool that is meant to put Intel back on top could make every chip more expensive. And the fix may not come from better optics at all. It may come from chemistry. You coat the wafer with a special polymer. You bake it for about a minute. And the molecules line up on their own into near-perfect patterns and repair the mistakes the light left behind. It’s called directed self-assembly. DSA. The industry fell in love with it more than a decade ago and then almost buried it. Now Intel is bringing it back at the exact moment it needs it most.
