What really happened to Germany's Hohenstaufen family after their dynasty fell is one of the most haunting tragedies in European medieval history. For more than a century, this Swabian family ruled the Holy Roman Empire, producing seven kings of Germany and three Holy Roman Emperors, including the legendary Frederick Barbarossa and the dazzling scholar-king Frederick II, known as the Wonder of the World. Their empire stretched from the Baltic Sea to the shores of Sicily. Then, in a single generation, it all collapsed. In this deep dive, we uncover the true fate of the last Hohenstaufen heirs, from the brutal Battle of Benevento on 26 February 1266, where King Manfred of Sicily was betrayed and killed, to the shocking public beheading of sixteen-year-old Conradin in Naples on 29 October 1268. But the story does not end on that scaffold. It stretches on for fifty more years in a slow campaign of imprisonment and erasure that most history books forget. We trace the twenty-two-year captivity of King Enzo of Sardinia in Bologna's Palazzo Re Enzo, where he wrote poetry until his death on 14 March 1272. We follow Manfred's wife Helena of Epirus to her lonely death at Nocera Inferiore in 1271, and his three small sons Henry, Frederick, and Azzolino into decades of chains inside Castel del Monte. We walk the sea-washed walls of Castel dell'Ovo in Naples, where the last male Hohenstaufen, Enrico son of Manfred, died forgotten on 31 October 1318. Along the way we explore the Great Interregnum from 1254 to 1273, the rise of Rudolf of Habsburg who was elected on 1 October 1273, and the extraordinary afterlife of the dynasty through Manfred's daughter Constance of Sicily, whose bloodline would eventually flow into virtually every royal house in Europe. We cover the Sicilian Vespers uprising on Easter Monday, 30 March 1282, the destruction of Hohenstaufen Castle during the German Peasants' War of 1525, and the way this one family's fall shaped European politics for the next six centuries. This is medieval history as it actually happened. Dark, strange, deeply human, and far more consequential than most people realize. Topics covered include the Hohenstaufen dynasty, Frederick II, Frederick Barbarossa, Manfred of Sicily, Conradin, Battle of Benevento, Battle of Tagliacozzo, Charles of Anjou, the Great Interregnum, Rudolf of Habsburg, Enzo of Sardinia, Castel dell'Ovo, Castel del Monte, Sicilian Vespers, Peter III of Aragon, Constance of Sicily, House of Habsburg, Kingdom of Sicily, Guelphs and Ghibellines, and the end of a European dynasty.
