Its unusual rainfall has also led to a fertile collection of flora and century-old rain trees in the Taiping Lake Gardens. Taiping originated as a Chinese mining settlement in the Larut district in the 1840s, where large-scale tin mining developed. It took over Kuala Kangsar's role as the state capital from 1876 to 1937, but was replaced by Ipoh. Picturesquely situated at the foot of Maxwell Hill, Taiping today is a historically significant town that is home to the most iconic museums, galleries, colonial buildings and much more just waiting to be discovered.
