Tigmanshu Dhulia: Censor Board Hugged Me, Then My Film Was Stopped | Godi Media and Bollywood

“Godi media has spoilt Indians.” In this speech at the Editors Guild of India’s Rajendra Mathur Memorial Lecture, writer, director and actor Tigmanshu Dhulia gives a blunt account of the state of Indian media and cinema. He covers: *** why he believes corporatisation hurt both journalism and films; *** why investigative journalism is too expensive for independent journalists; *** why so many films now follow the same template; *** the pressure filmmakers face from corporates, the censor board and political groups. He tells the story of his film Raag Desh, on the INA Red Fort trials: censor board members hugged him and passed it without cuts, and then the film was stopped. He also recalls how Indian filmmakers outwitted British censors, how Nehru cleared Ganga Jamuna after watching it himself, and how Balraj Sahni left jail every day to shoot Halchal.
