Littlefinger watches the triumphant smile form on King Joffrey’s face as his guards bring the news from the Black Cells. Ned Stark is willing to confess his crimes publicly and proclaim Joffrey as the king. Cersei reminds Joffrey that in exchange, Ned must be allowed to take the Black. Joffrey frowns but listens impatiently to how Cersei made this offer to Ned and how it would serve their interests to avoid conflict with the North. While Joffrey seems to agree, Littlefinger can sense the unhappiness in the young king, and in his experience, that usually means that Joffrey is getting ideas. A dangerous thing. The meeting does not last much longer, and once it ends, Littlefinger lingers in his seat, making a show of folding one of the parchments he’s brought until the queen leaves. Only then does he stand up and wave the young king over. Joffrey: What is it, Lord Baelish? More concerns about taxation? Littlefinger: I always have concerns about taxation, but I will not presume to bore you with that. No, my concern today is regarding Ned Stark. Do you truly intend to spare him and send him to the Wall? Joffrey: It is what she wants. Littlefinger: That is true enough, but certainly not an excuse that will sit well with many people. The king decrees because his mother told him to. Joffrey (Annoyed): Watch yourself, Lord Baelish. I could have your tongue for that. Littlefinger: Begging your pardon, your grace. I meant no disrespect. I merely wish to point out the issue in this plan. Her grace is merciful, but she is also rather short-sighted with her plans. Ned Stark rules Winterfell and is loved by his bannermen. They will still see him as their lord even if he formally renounces his title. Joffrey: That is defiance against their king. Maybe a sharper lesson is in order. I hear Northmen do not follow the Faith of the Seven. Do you think the High Septon will be upset if I behead him upon the Steps of Baelor? Littlefinger: He will be incredibly offended, your grace. The Seven can be cruel, but they are not gods who take interest in blood currency. No, I am certainly not suggesting anything like that. Joffrey: You tell me that letting him live makes him dangerous. Now you tell me that killing him is dangerous. What would you have me do? Littlefinger: Both options indeed carry risks. What I am trying to say is that there are certain variables that must be considered before you take either action. For example, the army of Northmen bearing down at your door. Joffrey: They are led by Robb Stark, a boy. My grandfather will make short work of him. Littlefinger: That is my hope as well, but we must consider the possibility that your grandfather cannot contain him; then Ned Stark becomes more important than ever. He will be your shield to keep the capital safe. Or perhaps your sword, if you know how to use him properly. Joffrey: A sword? You think that he would fight against his son. Littlefinger: Not at all, but Lord Stark loves his children and his children love him back. They will do anything for his safe return, and that might be used to our advantage. For the first time, Joffrey begins to understand what Littlefinger is getting at and smiles. His hand pulls away from the door, and he sits back down in a seat that the Master of Coin pulls for him as he begins to outline his plan. Cersei intends for the public proclamation to be carried out as soon as possible and schedules for Ned to be brought to the Sept of Baelor at the end of the week. She hopes this might cause some Northmen to reconsider their course of action. However, Joffrey suddenly announces that he will do no such thing. He wishes to humiliate Ned a bit longer before finally sending him on his way. First, he has Ned brought before the Red Keep for an audience with the court.
