10 Historical Myths That Turned Out To Be Real
Number ten: The Trojan War. In eighteen seventy-one, a German businessman named Heinrich Schliemann stood on a low, unremarkable hill in northwestern Turkey called Hissarlik, holding a battered copy of Homer's Iliad, and ordered his workmen to start digging. The academic establishment of Europe had spent centuries treating the Iliad as magnificent poetry and nothing more, a literary confection dressed up as history, and the men who held professorships in classical studies regarded Schliemann with the particular contempt reserved for gifted amateurs who refuse to accept their place. His workmen drove their picks into the hillside anyway, and within weeks the soil began returning things that had no business being there if the story was fiction: walls, burnt timber, bronze arrowheads, and the unmistakable layered stratigraphy of a city that had been built, destroyed, and rebuilt not once but nine successive times across thousands of years.
