What if I told you that at an altitude of 14,200 feet (4350m) in the Uttarakhand Himalayas, there exists a massive alpine lake that almost nobody knows about? A place with no proper photos on the internet. No documented trekking reports. No YouTube videos. Almost no information available online. This is the story of my journey to Hardaul Kund, a hidden high-altitude lake located deep inside the remote Johar Valley of Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand. The idea of this expedition started years ago when I was exploring the Himalayas on Google Earth. During that search, I noticed a large lake marked on the map at around 4350 meters elevation. Surprisingly, despite hours of searching on Google, YouTube, and trekking forums, I couldn’t find any detailed information, photographs, or expedition records about this place. That mystery eventually led me to pack a 20 kg backpack, team up with a fellow trekker, and begin an expedition into one of the least explored corners of the Kumaon Himalayas. Located beyond the famous Milam Glacier route, Hardaul Kund lies in the rugged high alpine zone where trees disappear, vegetation becomes scarce, and the landscape is dominated by glaciers, snowfields, and endless rock faces.
