What did Jesus really mean when He said that true worshipers would worship the Father “in spirit and truth”? In John 4, a conversation beside Jacob’s well begins with an ancient dispute: Should God be worshiped on Mount Gerizim or in Jerusalem? But Jesus’ answer takes the Samaritan woman—and us—far beyond a question of location. These words are often connected with sincerity, emotion, music, or correct doctrine. Yet the conversation in John’s Gospel points to something deeper, rooted in the identity of Jesus, the work of the Spirit, and the way God makes Himself known. In this video, we carefully follow the context of John 4 and the wider themes of John’s Gospel to understand why Jesus’ words were so significant then—and why they still challenge the way Christians think about worship today. What part of Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman has most shaped your understanding of worship?
