China–Vietnam Border | A Living Pop-Up Museum

Every Saturday morning, the border gate opens at Jinshuihe Port in Jinping County, Yunnan, China. Vietnamese villagers cross into China carrying baskets filled with vegetables, fruit, herbs, handmade clothing... Jinping lies in southern Yunnan, directly across from Lai Châu Province in northern Vietnam. Miao/Hmong, Yao/Dao, Hani, Dai/Tai, and other ethnic communities have lived on both sides of this border for generations. They may carry different documents, but many still share languages, relatives, clothing traditions, and everyday knowledge.
